Speaking of wholly inappropriate and f-ed up, I was assigned Judy Blume’s “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” for a book report in 4th grade. From Wikipedia and my nightmares:

“Margaret also confronts many other pre-teen female issues, such as buying her first bra, having her first period, coping with belted sanitary napkins (changed to adhesive sanitary pads for the 2006 edition of the book), jealousy towards another girl who has developed a womanly figure earlier than other girls, liking boys, and whether to voice her opinion if it differs from what her girlfriends seem to believe.”

I vaguely remember reading this book. Was this the one in which a brother and sister are locked up in an attic by their grandma who is slowly killing them via arsenic poisoning via Sunday powdered donuts and the kids end up having sex with one another? Or was that another book? Or was that a nightmare?

I used to work hotel laundry. The maids would give me all the stuff people left in the rooms, which mostly consisted of airport novels, once read and discarded. Totally not fit for 16/17 year olds.

I remember my mother reading this book. The cover always freaked me out.

I read The Stand in sixth grade. After everybody dies, some guy breaks into Yankee Stadium and runs the bases buck naked before masturbating on home plate. I asked my mom what masturbation was and she told me to look it up in the dictionary. I still didn’t get it.
